Crunchy Delight Air Fryer Crispy Onions

air fryer crispy onions

These air fryer crispy onions are a quick, gluten-free snack or topping that’s crunchy, golden, and packed with flavor. Perfect for salads, soups, burgers, or munching straight from the bowl.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium yellow onions (or white/red onions)
  • 1/4 cup gluten-free flour (rice flour or blend; cornstarch as alternative)
  • 12 tablespoons olive oil (or avocado oil, coconut oil, or sunflower oil)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

Instructions

  1. Peel and slice onions as thin as possible, aiming for 1/8-inch rings.
  2. Optional: Soak onion slices in cold water for 10 minutes, then pat dry thoroughly.
  3. In a mixing bowl, toss onions with gluten-free flour until lightly coated.
  4. Drizzle olive oil over onions and add salt, pepper, and garlic powder if using. Toss to coat evenly.
  5. Preheat air fryer to 350°F (175°C) for 2 minutes.
  6. Arrange onions in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Work in batches if needed.
  7. Air fry for 8-12 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through. Check at 7 minutes if your air fryer runs hot.
  8. Transfer crispy onions to a plate lined with paper towel to absorb excess oil.
  9. Sprinkle with extra salt if desired and serve immediately or use as a topping.

Notes

For best crunch, slice onions thin and avoid crowding the air fryer basket. Shake the basket halfway through cooking for even crisping. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days and re-crisp in the air fryer if needed. Try seasoning variations like smoked paprika, cayenne, or nutritional yeast for extra flavor.
