A timeless and smooth Old Fashioned whiskey cocktail that balances sweet, bitter, and smoky notes with simple ingredients and easy preparation.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 oz Bourbon or Rye Whiskey
  • 1 sugar cube (or 1 teaspoon simple syrup)
  • 23 dashes Angostura Bitters
  • 1 twist of orange peel
  • Splash of water (about 1 tsp)
  • Ice (preferably a large cube or sphere)

Instructions

  1. Place one sugar cube in an Old Fashioned glass. Add 2-3 dashes of Angostura bitters and a splash of water (about 1 tsp). Muddle the sugar until it dissolves and forms a syrupy base, about 30 seconds. Add a little more water if needed.
  2. Pour 2 oz of bourbon or rye whiskey into the glass. Add a large ice cube or a few smaller ones.
  3. Stir gently with a bar spoon for about 20 seconds to chill and mix flavors without breaking the ice too much.
  4. Cut a fresh orange peel about 1 inch long. Twist it over the glass to release oils, rub it around the rim, and drop it in as garnish.
  5. Enjoy immediately, savoring the smooth, slightly sweet, and citrus-kissed whiskey cocktail.

Notes

Use a quality bourbon or rye whiskey for best flavor. Large clear ice cubes melt slower and keep the drink from diluting too quickly. Expressing the orange peel oils over the drink adds essential aroma and flavor. Stir gently to avoid breaking the ice. Serve immediately for best taste.
