This copycat Starbucks brown sugar shaken espresso is a quick and easy homemade version of the popular coffee shop drink. Made with just four simple ingredients, it’s bold, sweet, and has a gorgeous frothy top that tastes better than the original.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 shots espresso (about 2 ounces total)
  • 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar (light or dark)
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup milk of your choice (whole, oat, or 2% recommended)
  • Ice cubes

Instructions

  1. Brew 2 shots of espresso (about 2 ounces total). While still hot, pour into a cocktail shaker or mason jar.
  2. Immediately add 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar and ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon to the hot espresso. Stir briefly to start dissolving the sugar.
  3. Fill the shaker or jar with a generous handful of ice cubes.
  4. Secure the lid tightly and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds until the shaker feels cold and foam forms.
  5. Fill a 12-ounce glass with fresh ice cubes. Strain the shaken espresso mixture over the ice.
  6. Pour ½ cup milk over the back of a spoon to create a gentle layer on top of the espresso.
  7. Stir with a long spoon or straw and serve immediately.

Notes

Use hot espresso immediately so the brown sugar dissolves properly. Pack brown sugar firmly when measuring. Shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds to create foam. Ensure lid is tight to avoid spills. Adjust sweetness by using 1½ tablespoons brown sugar for a less sweet version. Best consumed immediately; does not store well.
