A warm, creamy, and velvety butterscotch hot toddy with a hint of citrus and spices, perfect for cozy evenings and comforting moments.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (240 ml) water, hot but not boiling
  • 2 oz (60 ml) whiskey or bourbon (optional for non-alcoholic version)
  • 2 tablespoons butterscotch sauce (homemade or store-bought)
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • A pinch of ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream or half-and-half (or dairy-free creamer alternative)
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • 1 small cinnamon stick (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Heat 1 cup (240 ml) of water in a small saucepan or kettle on medium heat until hot but not boiling, about 3-4 minutes.
  2. Pour 2 tablespoons of butterscotch sauce into a heatproof mug. Add the hot water and stir well with a whisk or spoon until the sauce dissolves completely.
  3. Add 1 tablespoon honey, 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and a pinch of nutmeg to the mug. Stir to blend flavors evenly.
  4. Add 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice and 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract. Stir to combine.
  5. Add 2 oz (60 ml) whiskey or bourbon. For a non-alcoholic version, omit whiskey and add a splash of apple cider or ginger ale.
  6. Slowly pour in 2 tablespoons heavy cream or half-and-half, stirring gently to create a velvety texture. Optionally, lightly whip the cream before adding for a frothier top.
  7. Garnish with a cinnamon stick. Let the drink sit for a minute to settle, then serve warm.

Notes

Warm the butterscotch sauce slightly before mixing if thick to avoid clumps. Add cream slowly while stirring to prevent curdling. Use room temperature cream for best results. For non-alcoholic version, omit whiskey and add apple cider or ginger ale. Can prepare butterscotch base and spices ahead and refrigerate up to 2 days. Reheat gently before serving.
