This homemade golden turmeric chai latte is a warm, comforting drink made with fresh turmeric, ginger, and a blend of aromatic spices. It’s quick to make, customizable, and perfect for cozy nights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 inch fresh turmeric, peeled and grated
  • 1 inch fresh ginger, peeled and grated
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (preferably Ceylon)
  • 3 green cardamom pods, lightly crushed
  • 2 whole cloves
  • 45 whole black peppercorns (or a generous pinch of ground black pepper)
  • 1 star anise pod (optional)
  • 1 cup whole milk (or oat milk, canned coconut milk)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 black tea bag (Assam or English Breakfast)
  • 12 tablespoons honey (or maple syrup, date syrup)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • For garnish: ground cinnamon, star anise pod, thin slice of fresh turmeric (optional)

Instructions

  1. Crush the whole spices: Using a mortar and pestle, gently crush the cardamom pods, cloves, and peppercorns to release their oils. If using ground spices, skip this step.
  2. Combine water and spices: In a small saucepan, add 1/2 cup water, crushed cardamom, cloves, peppercorns, star anise (if using), and grated turmeric and ginger. Stir to combine.
  3. Bring to a gentle simmer: Place the pan over medium heat and bring to a gentle simmer (small bubbles breaking the surface). Let simmer for 3 minutes.
  4. Add tea bag and cinnamon: Drop in the black tea bag and ground cinnamon. Stir once and let steep for 2 minutes. Do not oversteep to avoid bitterness.
  5. Pour in the milk: Add the milk and stir. Increase heat to medium-high and bring to a gentle simmer again. Watch carefully to prevent boiling over.
  6. Simmer for 2-3 minutes: Let the mixture simmer over low heat until steaming hot but not boiling. Stir occasionally to prevent a skin from forming.
  7. Remove from heat and add sweetener: Take the pan off the burner. Stir in honey (or preferred sweetener) and vanilla extract. Taste and adjust sweetness.
  8. Strain into your mug: Place a fine-mesh strainer over your mug and pour the latte through it. Use a spoon to press on the solids to extract all liquid. Discard solids.
  9. Whisk for froth (optional): Whisk the strained latte with a fork or small whisk for about 15 seconds to create a light foam.
  10. Garnish and serve: Dust with ground cinnamon, float a star anise pod, or add a thin slice of fresh turmeric. Serve immediately.

Notes

Fresh turmeric stains everything; wear an apron or old shirt. Do not skip black pepper—it boosts curcumin absorption. Watch heat to prevent milk from boiling over. For busy mornings, make a turmeric-ginger paste (grated turmeric and ginger with coconut oil) and store in fridge for up to 2 weeks. Toast whole spices in dry pan for 30 seconds before adding water for extra depth.
