A warm, comforting drink combining melted butter, rich rum, and warm spices, perfect for chilly evenings and cozy gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup (100g) packed brown sugar (light or dark)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 ounces (45ml) dark rum
  • 1 cup (240ml) hot water or hot apple cider
  • Optional: cinnamon sticks or star anise for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine softened unsalted butter and packed brown sugar.
  2. Add ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground cloves, and vanilla extract.
  3. Cream together with a wooden spoon or spatula until smooth and well blended, forming a soft, spiced paste.
  4. Heat water or apple cider in a kettle or saucepan until hot but not boiling.
  5. Place 2 tablespoons of the butter batter into a warmed mug.
  6. Pour 1 1/2 ounces of dark rum over the batter.
  7. Slowly add the hot water or cider, stirring continuously until the batter fully melts and the drink is creamy and smooth.
  8. Taste and adjust sweetness or spice by adding more brown sugar or cinnamon if desired.
  9. Garnish with a cinnamon stick or star anise if desired and serve immediately.

Notes

If the butter batter is too firm, let it sit at room temperature for 10 minutes before mixing. Stir well to prevent clumps and achieve a silky texture. Pre-make the butter batter and refrigerate for up to two weeks. Use thick ceramic mugs to keep the drink warm longer. For dairy-free, substitute butter with plant-based butter or coconut oil and brown sugar with coconut sugar. For a non-alcoholic version, omit rum and use hot apple cider or spiced tea.
