Cozy S’mores Hot Chocolate - featured image

A nostalgic and comforting hot chocolate recipe inspired by classic s’mores, featuring toasted marshmallows, crushed graham crackers, and rich chocolate in a creamy base. Perfect for chilly nights and cozy gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (480 ml) milk (whole or 2%; can substitute almond or oat milk for dairy-free)
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows (use vegan marshmallows if needed)
  • 3 sheets graham crackers, crushed
  • 1/4 cup bittersweet chocolate chips (optional)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Crush the graham crackers by placing them in a plastic bag and crushing with a rolling pin or pulsing in a food processor until fine crumbs form. Set aside.
  2. In a medium saucepan, whisk together the unsweetened cocoa powder, granulated sugar, and a pinch of salt to prevent lumps and ensure even flavor.
  3. Slowly pour in 2 cups (480 ml) of milk while whisking continuously to create a smooth cocoa base. (Tip: warm the milk slightly beforehand for faster mixing.)
  4. Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir constantly with the whisk to prevent scorching. Heat until steaming but not boiling, about 5 minutes, until the mixture thickens slightly and smells chocolaty.
  5. Stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and 1/4 cup bittersweet chocolate chips until melted for extra richness.
  6. Carefully ladle the hot chocolate into heatproof mugs, filling about 3/4 full to leave room for toppings.
  7. Sprinkle a generous layer of crushed graham crackers on top of each mug.
  8. Pile mini marshmallows on top of the graham cracker crumbs.
  9. Use a kitchen torch to toast the marshmallows until golden and gooey, or place mugs under the broiler for 1-2 minutes, watching closely to avoid burning.
  10. Serve immediately and enjoy warm.

Notes

Toast marshmallows carefully using a kitchen torch for best results; if using a broiler, watch closely to avoid burning. Warm milk slightly before mixing to prevent lumps. Sprinkle graham cracker crumbs fresh before toasting marshmallows to maintain crunch. For vegan or dairy-free versions, substitute milk and marshmallows accordingly. Variations include adding cinnamon, nutmeg, cayenne, or peanut butter for extra flavor.
