A warm, comforting homemade cocktail blending the sweetness of maple syrup, the spicy warmth of bourbon, and the tangy freshness of apple cider. Perfect for chilly fall and winter evenings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (480 ml) fresh, unfiltered apple cider
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 3 whole cloves (optional)
  • 2 thin slices fresh ginger (optional)
  • 1 strip orange peel (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) pure maple syrup (Grade A, dark amber preferred)
  • Juice of half a lemon (about 1 tablespoon or 15 ml)
  • 2 ounces (60 ml) bourbon

Instructions

  1. Pour 2 cups (480 ml) of apple cider into a small saucepan. Add 1 cinnamon stick, 3 whole cloves, 2 thin slices of fresh ginger, and a strip of orange peel if using.
  2. Warm over medium heat for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally. Heat until hot and fragrant but do not boil; keep at a gentle simmer.
  3. While the cider warms, add 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of pure maple syrup and the juice of half a lemon (about 1 tablespoon or 15 ml) to a heatproof mug.
  4. Carefully strain the hot cider to remove the spices, then pour the warm liquid into the mug over the maple syrup and lemon juice.
  5. Stir in 2 ounces (60 ml) of bourbon until well combined and the maple syrup is fully dissolved.
  6. Garnish with a fresh cinnamon stick or a thin apple slice if desired. Serve hot and enjoy.

Notes

Do not boil the cider to preserve alcohol and fresh apple flavor. Use real maple syrup for best taste. Freshly squeezed lemon juice is essential to balance sweetness. Warm mugs before serving to keep the drink hot longer. Adjust sweetness or tartness by adding more maple syrup, cider, or lemon juice as needed. For non-alcoholic version, substitute bourbon with vanilla extract or apple juice concentrate.
