A rich, velvety hot chocolate inspired by campfire s’mores, combining creamy milk and cream with toasted marshmallows and crushed graham crackers for a nostalgic outdoor treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups whole milk (480 ml)
  • ยฝ cup heavy cream (120 ml)
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • ยฝ cup mini marshmallows (about 30 g)
  • ยฝ cup milk chocolate chips (90 g)
  • 3 sheets graham crackers, crushed
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Warm the milk and cream: In a medium saucepan, combine 2 cups whole milk and ยฝ cup heavy cream. Heat over medium-low heat for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until hot but not boiling (around 160ยฐF / 70ยฐC).
  2. Mix cocoa and sugar: While the milk mixture warms, whisk together 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder, 3 tablespoons granulated sugar, and a pinch of salt in a small bowl.
  3. Combine cocoa mixture with milk: Slowly whisk the cocoa and sugar blend into the warm milk and cream. Keep whisking until fully dissolved and the mixture is smooth and slightly thickened, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add chocolate chips and vanilla: Stir in ยฝ cup milk chocolate chips and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Continue stirring until the chocolate melts completely, forming a glossy, velvety hot chocolate base.
  5. Toast marshmallows: Using campfire-safe skewers, toast about ยฝ cup mini marshmallows over the fire until golden brown and puffed (about 1-2 minutes).
  6. Stir in toasted marshmallows and crushed graham crackers: Immediately add the toasted marshmallows to the hot chocolate, stirring gently so they melt slightly and infuse the drink with smoky sweetness. Sprinkle 3 crushed graham cracker sheets on top or stir them in for crunch.
  7. Serve and enjoy: Pour the creamy campfire s’mores hot chocolate into your mug or thermos. Sip slowly by the fire.

Notes

Heat milk and cream gently over medium-low heat to avoid scorching. Toast marshmallows slowly above flames for best caramelization. Crush graham crackers fresh before serving for optimal crunch. If hot chocolate thickens too much, stir in a splash of milk before serving. Can be prepared in a thermos with boiling water if no stove is available.
