A simple, warm, and indulgent hot chocolate made with whole milk, cocoa powder, sugar, and topped with mini marshmallows. Perfect for cozy winter evenings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups whole milk (480 ml)
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/2 cup mini marshmallows
  • Optional: 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Optional: 1/2 teaspoon espresso powder

Instructions

  1. Pour 2 cups (480 ml) of whole milk into a small saucepan. Heat over medium-low heat until warm but not boiling, about 3-4 minutes.
  2. In a small bowl, combine 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder and 2 tablespoons granulated sugar. Stir to break up any lumps.
  3. Slowly whisk the cocoa and sugar mixture into the warm milk. Stir continuously until smooth and rich, about 1-2 minutes.
  4. Add a pinch of salt and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. If using, add cinnamon and espresso powder. Stir well to combine.
  5. Continue warming for another 1-2 minutes, whisking regularly. The hot chocolate should be steaming hot but not boiling.
  6. Pour the hot chocolate into a heatproof mug. Top with about 1/2 cup mini marshmallows. Optionally, toast marshmallows lightly with a kitchen torch or under a broiler for 30-60 seconds.
  7. Sip slowly and enjoy the creamy, comforting flavor.

Notes

Heat milk gently to avoid scorching and bitterness. Whisk constantly to prevent lumps. Add marshmallows last to preserve their texture. For thicker hot chocolate, whisk in 1 teaspoon cornstarch dissolved in 1 tablespoon milk during step 3. Vegan version can be made with plant-based milk and vegan marshmallows.
