A quick and easy recipe to make a creamy, refreshing iced caramel macchiato at home, replicating the iconic Starbucks drink with simple ingredients and a homemade caramel sauce.

  • 1 cup (240 ml) milk (whole milk recommended, or almond, oat, or coconut milk for dairy-free)
  • 2 tablespoons vanilla syrup (store-bought or homemade)
  • 2 tablespoons caramel sauce (homemade or good quality store-bought like Ghirardelli)
  • Ice cubes (enough to fill the glass)
  • Optional: pinch of sea salt for salted caramel twist
  • Optional: splash of heavy cream for extra richness
  • Optional: sweetener adjustments (honey, agave, or sugar)
  • Optional: cinnamon stick for brewing coffee (seasonal twist)
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon cocoa powder or chocolate syrup for mocha macchiato
  • Optional: dash of cinnamon or nutmeg for spiced macchiato

Instructions

  1. Brew 2 shots of espresso (about 60 ml / 2 fl oz) or 1/2 cup (120 ml) of very strong coffee using your preferred method. Set aside to keep warm.
  2. In a serving glass, combine 1 cup (240 ml) of milk with 2 tablespoons of vanilla syrup. Stir well until fully mixed.
  3. Fill the glass with ice cubes or crushed ice, about 1 cup (240 ml) to chill the drink without diluting it too quickly.
  4. Slowly pour 2 tablespoons of caramel sauce around the inside of the glass to coat the sides and create a swirl effect.
  5. Gently pour the espresso over the milk and ice to create the signature layered look.
  6. Optional: Add a pinch of sea salt on top for a salted caramel twist or a splash of heavy cream for extra richness. Stir lightly if desired.
  7. Serve immediately with a straw or spoon to mix the layers as preferred.

Notes

Pour espresso over milk and ice slowly to preserve the layered look. Use freshly brewed espresso for best flavor. Chill your glass beforehand to keep the drink colder longer. Adjust sweetness to taste. Freeze coffee into ice cubes to avoid dilution. Avoid pouring hot espresso into very cold milk to prevent curdling.
