  • 2 ounces (60 ml) hot water (about 175ยฐF or 80ยฐC)
  • 1 cup (240 ml) cold milk of choice (whole, almond, oat, or soy milk)
  • ยฝ cup (120 ml) heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) vanilla syrup or simple syrup (adjust to taste)
  • A pinch of fine sea salt (optional)
  • Ice cubes, as needed

Instructions

  1. Sift 1 to 2 teaspoons of matcha powder into a small bowl to avoid clumps.
  2. Pour in 2 ounces (60 ml) of hot water (about 175ยฐF or 80ยฐC) and whisk vigorously in a zig-zag motion with a bamboo whisk or handheld frother until fully dissolved and frothy, about 1-2 minutes.
  3. Fill a tall glass almost to the top with ice cubes.
  4. Pour 1 cup (240 ml) of cold milk over the ice.
  5. In a mixing bowl or jar, combine ยฝ cup (120 ml) heavy cream, 1 tablespoon (15 ml) vanilla syrup, and a pinch of sea salt if using.
  6. Whip the cream mixture with an electric mixer, handheld frother, or shake vigorously in a jar for 2-3 minutes until thickened and soft peaks form. Avoid overwhipping.
  7. Slowly pour the prepared matcha over the milk and ice to create a green swirl.
  8. Gently spoon or pour the sweet cream cold foam on top to form a creamy cap.
  9. Optionally, dust a little extra matcha powder or cocoa powder on the foam for garnish.
  10. Serve immediately with a straw.

Notes

Use ceremonial grade matcha for best flavor and color. Avoid boiling water to prevent bitterness. Keep cream cold before whipping for better foam. Do not overwhip the cream to avoid turning it into butter. For dairy-free, substitute milk with oat or almond milk and heavy cream with coconut cream. Serve immediately for best texture. Leftovers can be stored separately in the fridge up to 24 hours; re-whip cream before serving.
