A rich and velvety hot chocolate made with Nutella and topped with a light, fluffy toasted hazelnut cream. Perfect for cozy nights and easy to prepare in about 10 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups whole milk (480 ml) – can substitute almond or oat milk for dairy-free option
  • 1/2 cup Nutella (125 g)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (14 g)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (25 g), adjust to taste
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup toasted hazelnuts, roughly chopped (50 g)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (120 ml) – substitute coconut cream for dairy-free
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar (15 g)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Toast the Hazelnuts: Preheat oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Spread hazelnuts on a baking sheet and toast for 8-10 minutes, shaking halfway through. Let cool, then rub skins off with a towel and chop finely. Set aside. (Prep time: 15 minutes including cooling)
  2. Make the Hot Chocolate Base: In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine milk, Nutella, unsalted butter, and granulated sugar. Whisk gently until Nutella melts and mixture is smooth and steaming, about 5-7 minutes. Do not boil. Stir in vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. (Prep time: 7 minutes)
  3. Prepare the Toasted Hazelnut Cream: Chill mixing bowl and beaters for 10 minutes. Pour heavy cream into bowl and whip on medium speed until soft peaks form. Gradually add powdered sugar and chopped toasted hazelnuts. Continue whipping until stiff peaks form. Adjust sweetness if needed. (Prep time: 10 minutes)
  4. Assemble and Serve: Pour hot chocolate into mugs. Top with a generous spoonful of toasted hazelnut cream. Garnish with whole toasted hazelnuts or cocoa powder if desired. (Prep time: 2 minutes)

Notes

Heat milk and Nutella mixture gently to avoid scorching. Chill bowl and beaters before whipping cream for best results. Toast hazelnuts until fragrant but not burnt. If Nutella is thick, add a splash of warm milk and whisk to smooth. The toasted hazelnut cream is best fresh but can be stored up to 24 hours in the fridge and whisked before serving.
