A rich and creamy slow cooker hot chocolate with real caramel flavor, balanced with sea salt for a deep, satisfying taste. Perfect for cozy winter gatherings or a quiet night in.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • Flaky sea salt, for garnish
  • Whipped cream, optional
  • Caramel sauce, optional for drizzle

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the unsweetened cocoa powder, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and fine sea salt.
  2. Pour the milk and cream into the slow cooker.
  3. Add the dry mixture to the liquid and whisk until mostly dissolved.
  4. Add the chocolate chips and stir.
  5. Add the vanilla extract and stir gently.
  6. Cover and cook on LOW for 2 to 3 hours. After 1 hour, whisk to ensure chocolate is melted. Do not cook on HIGH.
  7. Taste and adjust salt or sweetness as desired.
  8. Serve immediately in mugs, topped with whipped cream, caramel sauce, and flaky sea salt.
  9. Keep the slow cooker on WARM for serving, stirring occasionally. Do not keep on WARM for more than 4 hours.

Notes

Do not cook on HIGH to avoid scorching. Whisk halfway through cooking. Flaky salt on top is essential for the salted caramel flavor. Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 4 days and reheated on the stovetop or microwave.
