A cozy holiday drink blending creamy milk and cream with rich chocolate, fresh peppermint, espresso, and a cheeky alcoholic spike for warmth and festive cheer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup whole milk (or any milk of choice)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 cup freshly brewed espresso or strong coffee
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure peppermint extract
  • 1 to 2 ounces peppermint schnapps or coffee liqueur (optional)
  • Whipped cream (homemade or store-bought, for topping)
  • Crushed candy canes or chocolate shavings (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Pour 1 cup whole milk and 1/2 cup heavy cream into a medium saucepan. Warm over medium heat for about 4โ€“5 minutes until steamy but not boiling, stirring occasionally.
  2. In a small bowl, combine 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder and 2 tablespoons granulated sugar. Add about 2 tablespoons of the warm milk and whisk into a smooth paste.
  3. Pour the cocoa paste back into the saucepan with the remaining warm milk and cream. Whisk well and heat gently for another 2โ€“3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Brew 1/2 cup espresso or strong coffee. If using instant espresso powder, dissolve 1 teaspoon in 1/2 cup hot water. Pour into serving mug.
  5. Slowly pour the chocolate milk blend into the coffee, stirring gently to combine.
  6. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract and 1 to 2 ounces peppermint schnapps or coffee liqueur per serving, adjusting to taste.
  7. Top with whipped cream and sprinkle crushed candy canes or chocolate shavings on top. Serve immediately.

Notes

Do not boil the milk to preserve creaminess and avoid bitterness. Whisk cocoa and sugar into a paste with warm milk to prevent lumps. Adjust peppermint extract carefully to avoid overpowering flavor. For dairy-free version, substitute milk and cream with coconut milk and coconut cream. Prepare chocolate peppermint base ahead and refrigerate up to 2 days; add coffee and alcohol fresh before serving.
