A velvety, comforting homemade taro milk tea with a vibrant purple hue, combining earthy taro powder and creamy milk for a nostalgic and indulgent drink.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons taro powder
  • 1 cup (240 ml) whole milk (or almond/oat milk for dairy-free option)
  • 1 cup (240 ml) water
  • 3 tablespoons sugar (brown sugar optional)
  • 2 black tea bags (or green tea bags)
  • Ice cubes
  • 1/4 cup cooked tapioca pearls (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

  1. Bring 1 cup (240 ml) water to a boil in a medium saucepan. Remove from heat and steep 2 black tea bags for about 5 minutes. Remove the bags and set tea aside to cool slightly.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine 2 tablespoons taro powder with 1 cup (240 ml) warm water. Whisk vigorously until smooth with no lumps.
  3. Stir in 3 tablespoons sugar (or sweetener of choice) into the taro mixture while itโ€™s still warm so it dissolves fully.
  4. Pour the brewed tea into the taro mixture and stir well.
  5. Slowly stir in 1 cup (240 ml) whole milk (or dairy alternative).
  6. If using, cook tapioca pearls according to package instructions (usually boiling for 5-7 minutes). Drain and rinse with cold water.
  7. Fill a glass with ice cubes, add cooked tapioca pearls if using, then pour the creamy taro milk tea over the top. Stir and serve.

Notes

Use warm water to dissolve taro powder to avoid lumps. Adjust sweetness to taste. Tapioca pearls are optional but add classic bubble tea texture. For dairy-free, substitute milk with almond, oat, or coconut milk. Store leftovers in airtight container up to 2 days; tapioca pearls separately up to 24 hours.
