A rich and cozy hot chocolate with a grown-up twist, blending velvety dark chocolate and smooth red wine for a comforting and sophisticated drink.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups whole milk (480 ml)
  • 4 ounces dark chocolate (70% cocoa, chopped)
  • 1/2 cup red wine (120 ml, fruity variety like Merlot or Pinot Noir)
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons sugar (brown sugar or maple syrup optional)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Whipped cream or marshmallows (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Warm the milk in a small saucepan over medium heat until steaming but not boiling, about 3 to 4 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  2. Whisk in the cocoa powder and sugar until fully dissolved. Adjust sweetness to taste.
  3. Lower heat to medium-low and add the chopped dark chocolate. Stir constantly until melted and smooth.
  4. Stir in vanilla extract and a pinch of salt.
  5. Slowly pour in the red wine while whisking continuously to blend smoothly without separating.
  6. Heat the mixture on low for another 2 minutes without boiling, until hot and luscious.
  7. Pour into heatproof mugs and top with whipped cream or marshmallows if desired. Optionally sprinkle with cocoa powder or grated chocolate.

Notes

Use good quality dark chocolate for best results. Avoid boiling the mixture to prevent bitterness and preserve wine flavor. Whisk continuously to keep texture smooth. For dairy-free, substitute milk with almond or oat milk and use dairy-free chocolate. Non-alcoholic option: replace red wine with grape or pomegranate juice.
