A cozy and indulgent latte featuring nutty brown butter, sweet maple syrup, and cinnamon-spiced whipped cream, perfect for a comforting coffee break.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (browned)
  • 1 shot freshly brewed espresso (about 1 ounce / 30 ml)
  • 1 cup whole milk (240 ml) or milk of choice (almond, oat, soy)
  • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream (60 ml) for whipped cream
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (divided: 1/2 teaspoon for whipped cream, 1/2 teaspoon for sprinkling)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Brown the butter: Place 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir occasionally until it melts, foams, and turns golden brown with a nutty aroma. Remove from heat immediately and set aside.
  2. Brew the espresso: Prepare 1 shot (1 ounce / 30 ml) of espresso using an espresso machine or moka pot. Alternatively, use strong brewed coffee or Aeropress concentrate.
  3. Heat and froth the milk: Warm 1 cup (240 ml) of milk gently until steaming but not boiling (around 150ยฐF / 65ยฐC). Froth the milk using a frother, whisk, or by shaking in a sealed jar until light and foamy.
  4. Make the cinnamon whipped cream: In a chilled mixing bowl, whip 1/4 cup (60 ml) heavy cream with 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract until soft peaks form. Avoid overwhipping.
  5. Combine maple syrup and brown butter: Stir 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup into the browned butter along with a pinch of salt until well mixed.
  6. Assemble the latte: Pour the maple-butter mixture into the espresso and stir gently. Add steamed milk, holding back foam with a spoon, then spoon foam on top.
  7. Top with cinnamon whipped cream: Generously dollop the cinnamon whipped cream on top and finish with a light sprinkle of cinnamon.

Notes

Watch the butter closely to avoid burning; stir constantly and remove from heat once golden brown. Use cold milk and a clean frother for best foam. Chill bowl and beaters before whipping cream. Prepare brown butter and espresso simultaneously to keep latte hot. Reheat gently if needed and add fresh whipped cream before serving.
