A smoky twist on the classic Old Fashioned cocktail featuring bourbon, real maple syrup, bitters, and a subtle smoky aroma for a warm, cozy drink perfect for relaxing evenings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 oz Bourbon Whiskey (e.g., Buffalo Trace)
  • 1/2 oz Pure Maple Syrup
  • 2 dashes Angostura Bitters
  • 1 strip Orange Peel (for garnish and aromatic oils)
  • Large ice cubes or ice sphere
  • Wood chips or smoked wood (optional, e.g., hickory or oak)

Instructions

  1. Chill your Old Fashioned glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water for about 5 minutes.
  2. Take a fresh strip of orange peel, twist it over the glass to release oils, then gently rub the rim with it and drop the peel into the glass.
  3. Pour 1/2 oz pure maple syrup and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters directly into the glass.
  4. Add 2 oz bourbon over the syrup and bitters.
  5. Add one or two large ice cubes or a single ice sphere to chill the drink without diluting too quickly.
  6. Using a bar spoon, stir gently for 20โ€“30 seconds until well combined and chilled.
  7. Optional: Smoke the cocktail by directing smoke from a smoking gun into the glass and covering it briefly, or ignite a small piece of hickory or oak wood chip and hold the glass over the smoke to capture it. Keep smoke subtle.
  8. Garnish with an additional fresh orange peel twisted over the top and drop it in.

Notes

Use large ice cubes or spheres to chill without diluting quickly. Do not over-smoke; a subtle puff is enough. Fresh orange peel is essential for aroma. Stir gently instead of shaking to avoid foam and dilution. Maple syrup can be swapped with honey maple syrup for a richer sweetness but changes flavor slightly. Bourbon is naturally gluten-free but verify your bottle’s label.
