smoked old fashioned cocktail - featured image

A smoky twist on the classic Old Fashioned cocktail featuring bourbon, bitters, sugar, and a cherry garnish, infused with subtle smoke for a rich, sophisticated flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ounces bourbon (e.g., Makerโ€™s Mark or Buffalo Trace)
  • 1 sugar cube or 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 23 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 strip fresh orange peel
  • 1 maraschino or Luxardo cherry for garnish
  • Large ice cubes or 1 large ice sphere
  • A small pinch of apple or cherry wood chips for smoking

Instructions

  1. Place the sugar cube in an Old Fashioned glass and add 2-3 dashes of Angostura bitters onto the sugar.
  2. Use a muddler to crush the sugar cube and mix it with the bitters until it dissolves into a syrupy base (about 1-2 minutes).
  3. Take a fresh strip of orange peel, twist it over the glass to release oils, drop it into the glass, and lightly muddle with the sugar and bitters.
  4. Pour 2 ounces of bourbon into the glass and stir gently with a bar spoon for about 20 seconds to combine flavors.
  5. Add one or two large ice cubes or a single large ice sphere to the glass.
  6. Using a handheld cocktail smoker, ignite the wood chips and fill the glass with smoke for 20-30 seconds, then cover the glass with a coaster or lid to trap the smoke inside.
  7. Let the smoke sit for 1-2 minutes to absorb the smoky flavor.
  8. Remove the cover and garnish with a maraschino or Luxardo cherry on a cocktail pick or directly in the glass.
  9. Optionally, express a little more orange peel oil over the top before serving.

Notes

Use large ice cubes or spheres to prevent quick dilution. Adjust smoking time to avoid bitterness; 20-30 seconds is ideal. Cover the glass after smoking to trap smoke. If no smoker is available, smoke the glass or use smoked bitters as alternatives.
