A smoky twist on the classic margarita featuring mezcal, fresh lime juice, agave syrup, and a charred orange wheel garnish that adds a caramelized citrus aroma.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 oz mezcal (joven, balanced smoky profile)
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice (about 30 ml)
  • 0.5 oz agave syrup (about 15 ml, Grade A preferred)
  • 0.5 oz orange liqueur (Cointreau or Triple Sec)
  • 1 thick orange wheel (about 1/3 inch / 8 mm thick) for garnish
  • Coarse sea salt (for rimming the glass, optional)
  • Ice cubes (large cubes preferred)

Instructions

  1. Run a lime wedge around the rim of a rocks glass, then dip it into coarse sea salt to coat. Set aside.
  2. Slice a thick orange wheel (about 1/3 inch / 8 mm). Heat a grill pan over medium-high or use a kitchen torch. Place the orange wheel on the grill or carefully char the surface with the torch until caramelized grill marks appear and the peel slightly blackens (about 1-2 minutes). Set aside to cool.
  3. In a cocktail shaker, combine 2 oz mezcal, 1 oz fresh lime juice, 0.5 oz agave syrup, and 0.5 oz orange liqueur.
  4. Fill the shaker with ice cubes, enough to chill but not overflow.
  5. Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds until the shaker feels cold and slightly frosty.
  6. Strain the drink into the salted rocks glass filled halfway with fresh ice cubes.
  7. Garnish with the charred orange wheel on top or float it gently for aroma and visual effect.
  8. Serve immediately to enjoy the fresh citrus and smoky balance.

Notes

Avoid over-charring the orange wheel to prevent bitterness; a little blackening is delicious. Shake briskly but not too long to avoid watering down the cocktail. For a smoky salt rim, mix coarse sea salt with a pinch of smoked paprika. Fresh lime juice is essential for brightness. Prepping charred orange wheels ahead saves time when making multiple drinks.
