Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (for red layer)
  • 1/4 cup water (for red layer syrup)
  • 1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (about 46 lemons)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for lemonade base)
  • 4 cups cold water (for lemonade base)
  • Ice cubes
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (for blue layer)
  • 1/4 cup water (for blue layer syrup)
  • Optional: sparkling water or club soda (to top off for fizz)
  • Optional: fresh mint leaves or lemon slices for garnish

Instructions

  1. Make the Red Strawberry Syrup: Combine sliced strawberries, 2 tablespoons sugar, and 1/4 cup water in a medium saucepan. Heat on medium until sugar dissolves and berries break down, about 5-7 minutes. Stir occasionally. Remove from heat and strain through a fine mesh sieve into a bowl. Chill completely in the fridge.
  2. Prepare the Lemonade Base: In a large pitcher, mix freshly squeezed lemon juice with 1/2 cup sugar. Stir until sugar dissolves. Add 4 cups cold water and stir again. Adjust sweetness if needed. Chill in the fridge for at least 10 minutes.
  3. Make the Blueberry Syrup: Repeat the strawberry syrup process with blueberries, sugar, and water. Heat until sugar dissolves and berries soften. Strain and chill.
  4. Layer the Drink: Fill tall glasses halfway with ice cubes. Slowly pour the red strawberry syrup to fill the bottom third of the glass. Gently pour the lemonade over the back of a spoon onto the red layer to create the middle white layer. Finally, add the blue syrup using the same spoon technique to layer on top.
  5. Optional Fizz: Top each glass with a splash of sparkling water or club soda before serving. Garnish with fresh mint or lemon slices.

Notes

Pour each layer slowly over the back of a spoon to maintain distinct layers. Chill syrups and lemonade before layering to prevent mixing. Straining syrups is optional for texture preference. Add sparkling water just before serving to keep fizz. Adjust sugar to taste or substitute with honey or agave syrup for a lighter sweetness.
