Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups whole milk (or almond milk for a dairy-free option)
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 8 oz semi-sweet chocolate chips (or chopped dark chocolate)
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Rum (spiced or dark)
  • Bourbon
  • Baileys Irish Cream
  • Kahlua
  • Peppermint schnapps
  • Whipped cream
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Chocolate shavings
  • Crushed candy canes
  • Caramel sauce
  • Sprinkles
  • Cinnamon sticks

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the milk and heavy cream. Heat over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until warm but not boiling.
  2. Add the chocolate chips, cocoa powder, sugar, vanilla extract, and salt. Whisk continuously until the chocolate is fully melted and the mixture is smooth.
  3. Reduce the heat to low and let the hot chocolate simmer gently for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.
  4. Transfer the hot chocolate to a slow cooker or thermal carafe to keep warm. If serving immediately, pour into mugs and set aside.
  5. Arrange your toppings in small bowls or dishes. Label them for easy selection, if desired.
  6. Set out your spirits with small measuring cups or shot glasses for guests to add their favorite spike.
  7. Encourage guests to build their perfect cup! Start with the hot chocolate base, add a splash of spirit, then pile on the toppings.

Notes

Use high-quality chocolate for the base to ensure a rich and creamy texture. Adjust sweetness to taste and keep the hot chocolate warm using a slow cooker or stovetop on low heat.
