A little sweet, a little spiced, with just enough warmth to make you forget the chill outside. This apple cider hot toddy is the ultimate comfort drink for cozy fall nights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups fresh apple cider
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 12 star anise (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • 4 ounces (120 ml) whiskey

Instructions

  1. Combine the ingredients: In a small saucepan, pour in 2 cups of fresh apple cider, 1 cup of water, 2 cinnamon sticks, 4 whole cloves, and 1-2 star anise (optional).
  2. Simmer: Heat the mixture over medium heat until it starts to simmer gently, about 5 minutes. Stir occasionally to make sure the flavors blend beautifully.
  3. Add honey and lemon juice: Stir in 2 tablespoons of honey and the juice of half a lemon. Give it a taste and adjust sweetness or tartness to your preference.
  4. Add the whiskey: Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in 4 ounces (120 ml) of whiskey. If you prefer a stronger kick, you can add a little moreโ€”just donโ€™t overdo it!
  5. Strain the spices: Use a fine mesh strainer to remove the cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise.
  6. Serve: Pour the hot toddy into two mugs or heatproof glasses. Garnish with a fresh cinnamon stick, a lemon slice, and perhaps a star anise for a fancy touch.

Notes

Choose high-quality apple cider for the best flavor. Avoid boiling the mixture to preserve the delicate flavors of the spices. Adjust sweetness and experiment with spices to suit your taste. For a non-alcoholic version, simply omit the whiskey.
