A whimsical and creamy hot chocolate with pastel swirls and a fluffy marshmallow cloud topping, perfect for cozy winter evenings and gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups whole milk (480 ml)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (120 ml)
  • 3 tablespoons high-quality cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup sugar (50 g)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Gel food coloring in pastel shades (pink, blue, lavender, yellow) or natural powders like beet or turmeric
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows (50 g)
  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream (60 ml)

Instructions

  1. Pour 2 cups whole milk and 1/2 cup heavy cream into a medium saucepan. Warm over medium heat for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally until hot but not boiling.
  2. In a small bowl, combine 3 tablespoons cocoa powder, 1/4 cup sugar, and a pinch of salt.
  3. Slowly whisk the cocoa-sugar mixture into the warm milk, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Cook on low heat for 3-4 minutes until smooth and steaming. Remove from heat and stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
  4. Divide the hot chocolate into 4 small bowls. Add a tiny dab of gel food coloring to each bowl (pink, blue, lavender, yellow). Stir gently to create a marbled effect without fully mixing.
  5. In a mixing bowl, whip 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream until soft peaks form. Gently fold in 1 cup mini marshmallows and 1 tablespoon powdered sugar until fluffy but still holding shape.
  6. Pour the swirled hot chocolate gently into heatproof mugs, layering the colors slightly for the unicorn look. Top each mug generously with the marshmallow cloud mixture.
  7. Optionally, use a kitchen torch or warm spoon to lightly toast the marshmallow cloud for a golden finish, watching closely to avoid burning.
  8. Serve immediately and enjoy the creamy, colorful magic.

Notes

Warm milk and cream gently to avoid scorching. Whip cream first before folding in marshmallows to maintain volume. Serve immediately after assembling to enjoy the fluffy marshmallow cloud. For dairy-free version, substitute milk and cream with coconut milk and coconut cream and use dairy-free marshmallows. Natural food colorings like beet or turmeric powders are recommended for pastel hues. Toast marshmallow cloud carefully to avoid burning.
