A cozy and elegant twist on the classic Old Fashioned cocktail, featuring rich bourbon balanced with pure maple syrup, bitters, and fresh orange zest. Ready in under 5 minutes, it’s perfect for relaxing evenings or impressing guests.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 oz bourbon (e.g., Buffalo Trace or Makerโ€™s Mark)
  • 1/2 oz pure maple syrup (100% pure, not pancake syrup)
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 strip fresh orange peel
  • Ice (large ice cubes preferred)
  • Optional: maraschino cherry or cinnamon stick for garnish

Instructions

  1. Place a large ice cube or a few smaller cubes into an Old Fashioned glass.
  2. Pour 1/2 oz (15 ml) pure maple syrup and add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters over the ice.
  3. Add 2 oz (60 ml) bourbon to the glass.
  4. Stir gently with a bar spoon for about 20 seconds to chill and combine flavors without diluting too much.
  5. Hold a strip of fresh orange peel over the glass and twist to release essential oils, then rub the peel’s outer side along the rim of the glass.
  6. Drop the orange peel into the glass as garnish. Optionally, add a maraschino cherry or cinnamon stick.
  7. Serve immediately and enjoy.

Notes

Use large ice cubes to prevent quick dilution. Stir gently rather than shaking to preserve bourbon’s smoothness. Fresh orange peel is essential for aroma and flavor. Adjust maple syrup quantity to taste to avoid over-sweetening. You can pre-mix bourbon, maple syrup, and bitters for parties and refrigerate, then stir with ice and garnish before serving.
