A classic bourbon old fashioned cocktail enhanced with a subtle smoky cherry garnish, adding warmth and depth to the traditional recipe.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 oz (60 ml) Bourbon Whiskey (e.g., Buffalo Trace or Makerโ€™s Mark)
  • 1/4 oz (7 ml) Simple Syrup (or maple syrup as a substitute)
  • 2 dashes Angostura Bitters
  • 2 Luxardo Maraschino Cherries for garnish
  • 1 strip Orange Peel for zest and aroma
  • Small amount of wood chips for smoking (hickory or applewood recommended, optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the smoked cherries: Place two Luxardo maraschino cherries in a small glass or bowl. Use a smoking gun to fill the container with smoke and cover it. Let cherries absorb smoke for about 5 minutes. Alternatively, toast wood chips in a pan until smoldering, then cover cherries with a metal bowl above the pan for 5 minutes.
  2. In an old fashioned glass, add 1/4 oz (7 ml) simple syrup and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters. Stir gently to combine.
  3. Pour 2 oz (60 ml) bourbon over the syrup and bitters mixture. Add a large ice cube or several smaller cubes.
  4. Stir gently with a bar spoon for about 20 seconds to chill and combine without bruising the bourbon.
  5. Twist a strip of orange peel over the glass to release oils, rub it around the rim, then drop it in the glass.
  6. Add two smoked cherries on a cocktail pick or directly into the glass.
  7. Serve immediately and enjoy.

Notes

Do not over-smoke the cherries to avoid overpowering the bourbon’s sweetness. Use large ice cubes to slow dilution. Stir gently instead of shaking to avoid bruising the bourbon. If no smoking gun is available, use stovetop smoking with wood chips and a metal bowl. For a twist, substitute simple syrup with maple syrup or reduce syrup for less sweetness.
