Perfect Cherry Bomb Whiskey Sour

cherry bomb whiskey sour - featured image

A bold and balanced whiskey sour cocktail with a playful burst of cherry flavor, combining smooth bourbon, fresh lemon juice, and simple syrup for a refreshing and comforting drink.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 oz bourbon whiskey (preferably with vanilla and caramel notes, e.g., Buffalo Trace)
  • 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 oz simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water)
  • 45 fresh cherries, pitted (or good-quality maraschino cherries if out of season)
  • 1 egg white (optional, for frothy texture)
  • Ice cubes
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Garnish: maraschino cherry or fresh lemon twist

Instructions

  1. Place 4-5 pitted fresh cherries into the cocktail shaker and muddle gently for about 20 seconds to release juice without bitterness.
  2. Add 2 oz bourbon whiskey, 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice, and 1/2 oz simple syrup to the shaker.
  3. Add egg white if using for a silky, frothy texture.
  4. Seal the shaker and dry shake vigorously without ice for about 15 seconds to emulsify the egg white and blend flavors.
  5. Add ice cubes to fill the shaker halfway and shake again for 15-20 seconds until cold and frosty.
  6. Strain the cocktail through a fine mesh strainer into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice.
  7. Add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters on top and swirl with a toothpick if desired.
  8. Garnish with a maraschino cherry or a lemon twist and serve immediately.

Notes

Use ripe, firm cherries for best flavor and avoid over-muddling to prevent bitterness. Fresh lemon juice is essential for bright tartness. Egg white is optional but adds a silky froth; use pasteurized egg whites for safety or aquafaba for a vegan option. Adjust simple syrup to taste if cocktail is too tart. Clear or large ice cubes melt slower and keep the drink fresh longer. Prepare sour mix ahead but add cherries, whiskey, and bitters fresh for best flavor.
