A sophisticated Old Fashioned cocktail featuring a crystal-clear ice sphere and a dramatic smoke bubble, enhancing flavor and presentation for a unique drinking experience.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 oz (60 ml) Bourbon or Rye Whiskey
  • 0.25 oz (7 ml) Simple Syrup (homemade or store-bought)
  • 2 dashes Angostura Bitters
  • Orange Peel for garnish
  • 1 large Clear Ice Sphere (about 2.5 inches diameter) made with purified water using directional freezing
  • Wood Chips or Smoke Pellets (applewood or cherrywood recommended)
  • Bubble Ring or Smoke Bubble Kit (optional)
  • Butane Torch or Lighter

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Clear Ice Sphere: Boil distilled or filtered water twice to remove dissolved gases. Pour into a small cooler or insulated container and freeze open-faced for 18-24 hours to create clear ice.
  2. Cut and Mold the Sphere: Remove the frozen block, cut off the cloudy bottom, fill a silicone sphere mold with the clear ice portion, and freeze for another 6-8 hours until solid.
  3. Mix the Old Fashioned: In a mixing glass, combine 2 oz bourbon or rye, 0.25 oz simple syrup, and 2 dashes Angostura bitters. Add ice cubes and stir gently for 30 seconds until chilled and slightly diluted.
  4. Assemble the Drink: Strain the cocktail into a rocks glass over the clear ice sphere. Twist an orange peel over the glass to release oils, rub the rim, and drop it in as garnish.
  5. Create the Smoke Bubble: Place the smoke bubble ring around the glass rim. Light a small pile of wood chips with a butane torch until smoking steadily. Capture the smoke with a glass dome or bubble tool and transfer it over the drink, trapping the smoke inside a bubble atop the glass.
  6. Serve and Pop the Bubble: Present the drink with the smoke bubble intact. When ready, gently pop the bubble to release the fragrant smoke and enjoy.
