Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Homemade Coffee Liqueur:
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) freshly brewed espresso (medium roast recommended)
  • 1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) water
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (240 ml) vodka (smooth, neutral like Titoโ€™s or Absolut)
  • For the Espresso Martini:
  • 2 oz (60 ml) homemade coffee liqueur
  • 1.5 oz (45 ml) vodka
  • 1 oz (30 ml) freshly brewed espresso, cooled
  • 1/2 oz (15 ml) simple syrup (optional)
  • Ice cubes
  • Garnish: 3 espresso beans

Instructions

  1. Make the Homemade Coffee Liqueur:
  2. In a small saucepan, combine 1/2 cup granulated sugar and 1/2 cup water. Warm over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves completely. Remove from heat.
  3. Add 1/2 cup freshly brewed espresso and 1 tsp vanilla extract to the syrup mixture. Stir gently to combine.
  4. Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature, about 15 minutes.
  5. Once cooled, pour in 1 cup vodka and stir well. Transfer to a clean bottle or jar with a tight lid. Store in the fridge for up to two weeks.
  6. Prepare the Espresso Martini:
  7. Brew a fresh shot of espresso (1 oz) and let it cool slightly.
  8. Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice cubes. Add 2 oz homemade coffee liqueur, 1.5 oz vodka, and the cooled espresso shot.
  9. Add 1/2 oz simple syrup if desired for extra sweetness.
  10. Seal the shaker and shake vigorously for about 20 seconds until frothy and well chilled.
  11. Double strain the cocktail into a chilled martini glass using a fine mesh strainer.
  12. Garnish with three espresso beans arranged on top.

Notes

Shake vigorously to create the signature frothy crema. Use freshly brewed espresso for best flavor. Store homemade coffee liqueur in the fridge for up to two weeks and shake before use. Let espresso cool slightly before shaking to avoid watering down the drink. Optional simple syrup can be added for sweetness. Variations include using rum instead of vodka or adding spices like cinnamon or cardamom to the liqueur.
