A classic Southern cocktail featuring bourbon, fresh mint, sugar, and crushed ice, perfect for a refreshing summer drink with a crisp, minty flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 to 10 fresh mint leaves
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons granulated sugar (or 1 tablespoon simple syrup as substitute)
  • 2 ounces (60 ml) bourbon (mid-proof recommended, e.g., Buffalo Trace or Woodford Reserve)
  • Crushed ice to fill the glass
  • Mint sprigs for garnish
  • Optional: lemon zest for aroma

Instructions

  1. Gently rinse about 8 fresh mint leaves and pat dry, avoiding bruising.
  2. Place mint leaves and 1 to 2 teaspoons granulated sugar into a julep cup or glass. Gently muddle for about 20 seconds to release oils without shredding leaves.
  3. Pour 2 ounces (60 ml) bourbon over the muddled mint and sugar. Stir gently with a bar spoon for about 10 seconds.
  4. Fill the glass with crushed ice, mounding above the rim for a frosted look.
  5. Add a splash of cold water or a little more bourbon on top if desired. Garnish with a fresh mint sprig, slapped between hands to release aroma.
  6. Serve immediately with a straw and enjoy before the ice melts.

Notes

Avoid over-muddling the mint to prevent bitterness. Use freshly crushed ice for best texture and chill. Slap the mint sprig before garnishing to release aroma. Use mid-proof bourbon for smoothness. Serve immediately for optimal flavor and chill.
