  • 1 to 1.5 inches fresh turmeric root, peeled and grated or finely chopped (or 1 teaspoon turmeric powder)
  • 1 to 1.5 inches fresh ginger root, peeled and grated or finely chopped
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons raw honey
  • 4 cups (1 liter) filtered cold water
  • Ice cubes, as needed for serving
  • Optional: pinch of freshly ground black pepper
  • Optional: fresh mint leaves for garnish
  • Optional: splash of sparkling water instead of still water

Instructions

  1. Roll the lemons on the countertop to soften them, then cut in half and juice until you have about 1 cup (240 ml) of fresh lemon juice. Set aside.
  2. Peel 1 to 1.5 inches each of fresh turmeric and ginger roots. Grate finely using a fine grater or microplane. Alternatively, pulse them with a few tablespoons of water in a blender for a more intense flavor.
  3. In a large pitcher, combine the lemon juice, grated turmeric, and grated ginger.
  4. Pour in 4 cups (1 liter) of cold filtered water.
  5. Stir in 3 to 4 tablespoons of raw honey while the mixture is at room temperature until the honey dissolves completely. Adjust sweetness to taste.
  6. Add a pinch of freshly ground black pepper if desired to enhance turmeric absorption.
  7. Refrigerate the lemonade for at least 30 minutes to chill and let flavors meld.
  8. Optional: Strain the lemonade through a fine mesh sieve to remove pulp and grated bits if preferred.
  9. Serve over glasses filled with ice cubes, garnished with lemon slices or fresh mint if desired.

Notes

Use fresh turmeric and ginger for best flavor. Add honey only when the mixture is cool or at room temperature to preserve enzymes. Adjust sweetness gradually to avoid oversweetening. Adding black pepper enhances turmeric absorption. Chill the lemonade for at least 30 minutes before serving. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
