A bright and bubbly homemade mocktail combining fresh blueberries, lemon juice, and sparkling water for a refreshing, alcohol-free drink perfect for summer gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries, washed
  • ยฝ cup granulated sugar (or honey/agave as a substitute)
  • ยฝ cup fresh lemon juice (about 34 lemons)
  • 1 cup water (for syrup)
  • 2 cups water (for lemonade base)
  • 2 cups chilled sparkling water
  • Ice cubes
  • Fresh mint leaves (optional, for garnish)
  • Lemon slices (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Make the blueberry syrup: Place 1 cup fresh blueberries, ยฝ cup granulated sugar, and 1 cup water into a small saucepan. Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Let it simmer for about 8-10 minutes until the blueberries break down and the mixture thickens slightly.
  2. Strain the syrup: Remove the saucepan from heat. Pour the mixture through a fine mesh strainer into a bowl or measuring cup, pressing gently on the solids to extract as much syrup as possible. Discard the pulp. Set the syrup aside to cool.
  3. Juice the lemons: While the syrup cools, squeeze the lemons to yield about ยฝ cup fresh lemon juice. Strain out seeds.
  4. Mix the lemonade base: In a pitcher, combine the cooled blueberry syrup, fresh lemon juice, and 2 cups of cold water. Stir well to combine. Taste and adjust sweetness by adding a little more water or lemon juice if needed.
  5. Chill and serve: Fill glasses with ice cubes, pour the blueberry lemonade base about three-quarters full, then top off gently with 2 cups chilled sparkling water. Stir lightly to blend without losing fizz.
  6. Garnish and enjoy: Add a few fresh blueberries, a sprig of mint, and a lemon slice to each glass. Serve immediately.

Notes

Use fresh lemon juice for best flavor. Press blueberry pulp gently when straining to avoid cloudiness. Add sparkling water last to preserve fizz. The blueberry lemonade base can be refrigerated up to 3 days; add sparkling water just before serving. Frozen blueberries can be used if thawed and drained. Sweetness can be adjusted by varying sugar or lemon juice amounts.
