A rich, creamy, and visually stunning hot chocolate inspired by red velvet cake, perfect for cozy Halloween nights and indulgent moments.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (480 ml) whole milk (or almond/oat milk for dairy-free)
  • 2 tablespoons (15 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons (30 g) cream cheese, softened
  • 3 tablespoons (38 g) sugar
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon red food coloring (gel or liquid)
  • Pinch of salt
  • Whipped cream (optional, for topping)
  • White chocolate shavings or red sprinkles (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Warm the milk in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat for about 3-4 minutes until warm but not boiling.
  2. Whisk together cocoa powder and sugar in a small bowl to prevent clumps.
  3. Gradually whisk the cocoa and sugar mixture into the warm milk, stirring continuously until fully dissolved.
  4. Add softened cream cheese in small dollops and whisk vigorously or use an immersion blender until silky and smooth.
  5. Stir in vanilla extract, a pinch of salt, and red food coloring; adjust color as desired.
  6. Continue warming on low for 2-3 minutes, whisking frequently, avoiding boiling.
  7. Pour into heatproof mugs and top with whipped cream, white chocolate shavings, or red sprinkles if desired.

Notes

Use softened cream cheese to avoid clumps. Heat milk gently to prevent scorching and curdling. Adjust red food coloring gradually for desired color. For dairy-free, use plant milk and vegan cream cheese. Optional additions include bourbon, cinnamon, or espresso for variations.
