  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup dark chocolate chips or chopped dark chocolate
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • Pinch of cinnamon
  • Dash of nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional: whipped cream or marshmallows for topping
  • Optional: brandy or bourbon for a spiked version
  • Optional: crushed candy canes for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine 2 cups of milk with 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder and whisk together until smooth.
  2. Place the pan over medium heat and stir occasionally as the milk warms up, being careful not to let it boil.
  3. Once the milk is hot but not boiling, add 1/4 cup of dark chocolate chips or chopped dark chocolate. Stir until fully melted and incorporated.
  4. Add 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, a pinch of cinnamon, and a dash of nutmeg. Stir well to combine.
  5. Add a pinch of salt and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Continue stirring until the cocoa is smooth and creamy.
  6. Remove the saucepan from heat and let it sit for a minute. Taste and adjust sweetness or spice if needed.
  7. Ladle the cocoa into mugs and top with whipped cream, marshmallows, or other toppings as desired.
