spiked eggnog recipe - featured image

A creamy, delicious homemade spiked eggnog with a rich blend of milk, cream, eggs, sugar, warm spices, and your favorite spirit. Perfect for holiday parties or cozy nights by the fire.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup rum, bourbon, or brandy
  • Optional garnishes: whipped cream, ground nutmeg, cinnamon sticks

Instructions

  1. Separate the eggs, placing the yolks in one bowl and the whites in another. Cover and refrigerate the whites for later use.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk the egg yolks and sugar together until the mixture is pale and creamy.
  3. In a medium saucepan, combine the milk, heavy cream, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Heat over medium heat until just steaming โ€“ do not boil.
  4. Slowly pour the hot milk mixture into the egg yolks, whisking constantly to avoid scrambling the eggs. This step is called tempering and ensures a smooth texture.
  5. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over low heat. Stir continuously with a wooden spoon until it thickens slightly and coats the back of the spoon. This takes about 5-7 minutes.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and your chosen spirit (rum, bourbon, or brandy).
  7. Let the eggnog cool to room temperature, then transfer to a pitcher or jar and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until chilled.
  8. Just before serving, whisk the egg whites to soft peaks and gently fold them into the chilled eggnog for a frothy finish.
  9. Serve cold with a garnish of whipped cream, a sprinkle of nutmeg, and a cinnamon stick for extra flair.

Notes

[‘Temper the eggs to avoid scrambling them.’, ‘Keep the heat low to prevent curdling.’, ‘Use freshly grated nutmeg and high-quality cinnamon for the best flavor.’, ‘Adjust the alcohol to suit your taste.’, ‘Eggnog tastes even better after a day in the fridge as the flavors meld together.’]
