A rich, chocolaty mocha latte with a simple spiderweb design using a squeeze bottle and toothpick. Perfect for Halloween mornings or spooky movie nights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 shot espresso or 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee
  • 1 cup whole milk (or 2% or oat milk)
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (preferably Dutch-processed)
  • 12 tablespoons granulated sugar (to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Chocolate syrup (for spiderweb design)
  • Whipped cream (optional, for topping)
  • Chocolate shavings or tiny plastic spider (optional garnish)

Instructions

  1. Brew your coffee: Make one shot of espresso or 1/2 cup of strong brewed coffee. Set aside.
  2. Make the mocha base: In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 cup of milk, 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder, and 1-2 tablespoons of sugar. Whisk constantly until the cocoa and sugar are fully dissolved and the milk is steaming but not boiling—about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add vanilla and coffee: Remove the saucepan from heat. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract and your brewed coffee. Stir to combine. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.
  4. Froth the milk: Pour the mocha mixture into your mug, leaving about an inch of space at the top. Use a milk frother or French press to froth the top layer until thick and foamy.
  5. Add whipped cream (optional): If desired, add a generous dollop of whipped cream on top of the foam.
  6. Create the spiderweb: Fill a squeeze bottle or zip-top bag with chocolate syrup. Starting from the center of the foam or whipped cream, squeeze a small circle. Then, working outward, squeeze a spiral that gets wider until you reach the edge of the mug.
  7. Drag the web: Take a toothpick and, starting from the center of the spiral, drag it outward toward the edge of the mug. Repeat this 6-8 times around the mug, spacing the drags evenly. Wipe the toothpick clean between drags.
  8. Garnish and serve: Sprinkle chocolate shavings or place a tiny plastic spider on the edge of the mug. Serve immediately.

Notes

For the cleanest web lines, wipe the toothpick on a paper towel after each drag. If the chocolate syrup is too runny, simmer it for a minute to thicken. Practice on a plate first if nervous about the design.
