Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups (960 ml) tomato juice, preferably low-sodium
  • 1 ยฝ cups (360 ml) vodka
  • ยผ cup (60 ml) freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp hot sauce (e.g., Frankโ€™s RedHot), adjust to taste
  • 1 tbsp freshly grated horseradish
  • 1 tsp celery salt
  • Freshly cracked black pepper, to taste
  • 12 slices thick-cut bacon
  • About 12 wooden skewers, soaked in water for 30 minutes
  • 4 celery stalks, trimmed and washed
  • 12 dill pickle spears or gherkins
  • 20 pitted green olives (stuffed with garlic or pimento optional)
  • 12 fresh cherry tomatoes
  • Optional: cooked shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • About 1 cup (150 g) cheese cubes (sharp cheddar or pepper jack)
  • Fresh ground black pepper for rimming glasses
  • Optional: smoked paprika for rimming glasses

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400ยฐF (205ยฐC). Soak wooden skewers in water for 30 minutes to prevent burning.
  2. Cut each bacon strip in half if smaller bites are desired. Thread 2-3 pieces of bacon onto each skewer in a zigzag pattern.
  3. Place bacon skewers on a wire rack set over a baking sheet. Bake for 15-20 minutes, turning once halfway through, until crispy and golden. Drain on paper towels.
  4. In a large pitcher, combine tomato juice, vodka, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, horseradish, celery salt, and freshly cracked black pepper. Stir well and chill for at least 30 minutes. Adjust seasoning as needed.
  5. Prepare garnishes by washing and trimming celery stalks, slicing pickles into spears, pitting olives if needed, rinsing cherry tomatoes, and prepping cheese cubes and shrimp if using. Arrange on platters or bowls.
  6. Rim glasses by running a lemon wedge around the rim, then dipping into a mixture of celery salt, freshly ground black pepper, and smoked paprika if desired.
  7. Set up the Bloody Mary bar with the chilled mix, ice buckets, garnishes, and bacon skewers. Provide cocktail picks for guests to customize their drinks.
  8. Encourage guests to add extra hot sauce, horseradish, or lemon wedges to taste.

Notes

Soak wooden skewers before baking to prevent burning. Use thick-cut bacon for best results. Chill Bloody Mary mix for at least 30 minutes for flavors to meld. Adjust hot sauce and horseradish to taste. Bacon skewers are best served fresh but can be reheated at 350ยฐF (175ยฐC) for 5-7 minutes. Garnishes can be prepped a day ahead but keep cold and separate until serving to avoid sogginess.
