A cozy and smooth twist on the classic old fashioned cocktail, featuring the warm, slightly sweet depth of pure maple syrup balanced with bourbon whiskey and aromatic bitters.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 oz (60 ml) bourbon whiskey
  • 1/2 oz (15 ml) pure maple syrup (Grade A amber or darker preferred)
  • 2 dashes aromatic bitters (Angostura bitters recommended)
  • Orange peel (for garnish)
  • 23 large ice cubes
  • Optional: Maraschino cherry (for garnish)
  • Optional: Orange slice (for garnish or muddling)

Instructions

  1. Chill your old fashioned glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water for about 5 minutes.
  2. Pour 1/2 oz (15 ml) of pure maple syrup into the glass, then add 2 dashes of aromatic bitters.
  3. Measure and add 2 oz (60 ml) of bourbon whiskey directly into the glass.
  4. Add 2-3 large ice cubes to the glass.
  5. Stir gently with a bar spoon for 20-30 seconds to chill and slightly dilute the drink.
  6. Hold a fresh orange peel over the glass and squeeze firmly to release oils, then rim the glass with the peel and drop it in as garnish.
  7. Optionally, add a maraschino cherry or a thin orange slice for extra sweetness and color.

Notes

Use large ice cubes to chill the drink without watering it down quickly. Stir gently to avoid over-dilution. Express the orange peel oils last to preserve aroma. Use quality maple syrup (organic Grade A) for best flavor. Optional garnishes include maraschino cherry or orange slice. Avoid shaking to maintain smoothness.
